questions from christian garbis

Hi, My name is Christian Garbis. I am a writer from the US living in Yerevan. My blog is called Notes From Hairenik, and I also write for the Armenian Weekly, which prints in Boston. I want to write an article about the Gay and Lesbian community in Armenia. I've already spoken to Mamikon Hovsepyan and several other gay men, but I wanted to get the viewpoint from lesbian women as well. Mamikon suggested that I contact you.

If you don't mind, could you answer some questions for me?

1. What has it been like for women who are lesbians living in a monoethnic and traditional society where homosexuality is not really tolerated or accepted? Homosexuality is a taboo subject for Armenians in general (including the US) that people do not want to address or understand. Please give an overall view and even a personal view if you would like to.

2. What are the reactions from family members when they learn that their daughter/sister is a lesbian?

3. Do lesbians face prejudice and scorn from people in society? How are lesbians treated? Are lesbian women assumed to be heterosexual for instance by society or do lesbians make there sexual orientation obvious to others?

4. Do you see future changes in the way society tolerates homosexuals in Armenia?

5. Finally, perhaps a strange question. Some Armenian men I spoke to would consider marrying a woman to have children so long as the wife-to-be accepted his gay lifestyle and personal needs. Do some lesbians wish the same from straight men to have children? Has this been done?I may want to use quotes from your answers (whoever answers this message). If you could write your name, that will be helpful. Your name will be changed for the article, do not worry about that.

Thanks for your help and regards,

Christian

  1. is homosexuality really a taboo subject in armenia? when t.a.t.u. came out with their scintillating song ("ya soshla s uma") about the two teenage girls who appear to be queer and kissed on tv, the armenians and mostly men were thrilled. the sexiest thing that hetero men can think of is, as we all know by now, two girls or women kissing. of course, as long as the girls are kissing FOR them, for THEIR gaze, for their PLEASURE. yet homosexuality is not tolerated if it DOES NOT bring pleasure to the dominant groups, mostly heterosexual men (or men who think that they are heterosexual). so yes, people CAN understand and WILL tolerate "homoerotic" behavior as long as it serves their purpose(s). otherwise, it's usually defined/constructed in the armenian society as "treason" (the security of the nation is being threatened) or "abnormality" (transgression of norms).

  2. as to question 5, garbis darling, you have probably heard of AI (artificial insemination), since many hetero couples do it in armenia nowadays. and as to the question about marriage -- do people have to get married to have children?? this bourgeois and nationalistic concept of marriage as the only socially acceptable mode of coupling is SO outdated and old school.

has it been done? i'm sure it has. but we're moving on . .

  5. I don't think homosexuality is a taboo subject for Armenians in the diaspora, I think that's a traditional notion that doesn't hold true is many diasporan Armenian communities.

    Dear Christian Garbis,

Let me start by saying that I agree with Lusine’s and Shushan’s comments above. See my responses to your questions below:

    1. In my opinion, “homosexuality” is not tolerated or accepted anywhere really. Yes, I agree with you when you say “Homosexuality is a taboo subject for Armenians in general (including the US) that people do not want to address or understand.” I live in Toronto, Canada, and I was raised within the Diasporan Armenian community here. I find the community conservative, and focused on only certain, exclusive issues. Unfortunately, this narrow viewpoint comes at a high cost: the cost of excluding the many facets of our identity and silencing our various voices. And I am not only speaking about queer women’s voices; I think anyone who is in any way seen as being outside of the norm, “different,” is silenced and marginalized.

    2. I am from the Diasporan Armenian community (and I do not live in Armenia), so perhaps I am not the best person to answer this question. That being said, from my personal experiences of coming out to my parents and the stories I’ve heard from both Diasporan and Hayastanci Armenians, the common response is “We still love you, but we think what you are doing [essentially, who you are] is wrong.” At best, it’s tolerated; at worst, it’s dangerous (as it is anywhere). Keep in mind, however, that many queer Armenians haven’t come out to their families.

    3. What do you mean by “or do lesbians make their sexual orientation obvious to others”? I understand you have good intentions, but personally, I’m offended by the way this question is phrased.

In general, I would say EVERYONE is considered heterosexual until they come out as being queer (and again this is not just in Armenia, but in the world-at-large). Funny how LGBT folks are always having to affirm their sexual identity, to confirm their “queerness”... and people wonder why we have parades... if people don’t see us then they assume we do not exist. In fact, most people, I would say, know more LGBT folks than they realize... Personally, I expect heterosexual people to “out” themselves as straight, otherwise I assume that everyone is at the very least bisexual :)

    4. Let’s hope so.

    5. I feel that enough people from our collective have answered this question and I don’t particularly have anything else to add. I agree with their comments.

Christian jan, despite our frustrations at your questions, I do appreciate you contacting us and opening up this dialogue. It is better to talk about these issues rather than be silent; as we know, if we do not speak up for ourselves, then others will speak for us and we just might not agree with what they have to say...
